Customer Reviews
General RV Center has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 based on over 1543 reviews on Google
Chris was nothing short of PHENOMENAL. He is the most personable, kind, and light-hearted salesman I've ever dealt with. He helped us find our dream RV. He constantly followed up and asked us if our needs were being met. We got a used airstream and during delivery, everyone was so kind and on top of it. Mark was AMAZING. He knew all about airstreams and let me ask all my constant questions. Lisa was fun and kind. When we found a small leak Tyler was the wonderful young man who investigated and fixed it then and there, hooked our trailer up, and assured us we left in confidence. The only thing I don't agree with is the lack of transparency in getting records of what work was done or what was documented from the service department by the service department. When you buy a vehicle you want to see the history or what was found or replaced when it was brought used, even the service manager Michael couldn't offer anything but a non-filled out checklist for their inspection that wasn't provided just was told it's extensive yet we missed a leak. Transparency is always a winner in my eyes other than that 100 percent recommend
We had a great experience at General RV Center in Ashland, VA with the purchase and installation of after-market theater seating for our RV. We wanted to make sure the fit would be perfect and it would be placed exactly where we wanted it. Tera assisted with the initial purchase and measurements and was very courteous, patient, and professional; NiAsya (our Service Advisor) was very nice and made sure everything was done to our specifications; Jeannie (the Service Manager) was also very nice and made sure our specifications got communicated to the technician; and our technician (Erik) was very professional and patient with us and made sure the seating was placed in the exact spot we wanted so that I was afforded more room behind the passenger seat so that it would fully recline. The install was done just the way we wanted and we could not be happier! All-in-all, we had a great experience with all these staff people and would be happy to use General RV Center again. We highly recommend them!
From sales to service, we were treated very well. Ryan Cox was our salesman and did an excellent job showing us features on each of the RVs. We looked at. Joey did a phenomenal job with our financing and answered all questions while ensuring that we understood the process. The maintenance department did a fantastic job wiring up our vehicle for a Toby behind. Everyone was extremely helpful and made us feel very comfortable while waiting in the dealership. I would highly recommend the Virginia General RV dealership to a friend.
The Issue: General RV Center in Ashland VA illegally sold us a very expensive used Tiffin motorhome that was hacked for diesel emissions and it cost us close to 7000 dollars to make it legal to drive again. And then they refused to cover the cost. It is illegal for a motor vehicle dealer in Virginia to sell a vehicle that does not meet current emissions standards, and they know that. Background story: We bought a 2019 Tiffin Wayfarer from General RV Center in Ashland VA back in May 2025. While the camper wasn't perfect, it was in very nice shape and had the features we wanted for some longer trips during our retirement. I've had a motorhome for a while, but never had one with a diesel motor. The coach drove well for the test drive and on the trip home, about 100 miles. Looking online, it had 3 outstanding recalls with Mercedes for the chassis and I didn't understand why they were never completed but figured I would get it serviced myself. About a week after getting it home, the dash lit up with warning lights. I thought it might be the rear wheel sensors which was one of the recall items. I drove it in the the MB dealer in limp mode at 30mph and left it with them. About 4 days later they called and asked if I had done anything to the emissions system, I said no. They told me that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) had been hacked and parts modified so that it could not work anymore. Apparently this is a thing people do so they don't have to deal with adding DEF fluid and try to get better mileage. As part of that hack, they download and overwrite the vehicle's computer software with a "Tune" so it won't recognize that the emission system isn't working anymore. It is not legal in the US and is advertised for "off road use only" One of the 3 recall items included a reflash of the computer, so now I knew why it was never done. The coach stayed at the MB dealership for about 3 weeks. The DPF was replaced (over 3500 for the part alone) along with the SCR which is like a diesel catalytic converter. All told, it cost about 6800 to make the coach legal again. If I had continued to drive the coach or had tried to sell the coach myself without fixing it, I would be guilty of a crime. After the repair at the MB dealer, I had the coach back at General RV in Ashland VA so they could repaint the front bumper which was part of the deal we made when we bought it. When the coach was done (4 weeks to paint a bumper) I picked it up and had a conversation with the manager, Ben. He claimed they did not know anything about the emissions system being hacked. When I dropped the coach off for the bumper repair, I asked Danny, the service rep at General if they worked on diesel vehicles there. He assured me that they have great master diesel mechanics on staff. So why one of their great mechanics never looked it over before they tried to sell it or did and they said nothing, is another mystery to me. The day I picked up the coach, the operations manager Ben, went off for a few minutes and came back and offered to cover half of the repairs. He knew they were in the wrong, otherwise he would have offered me nothing. I want them to cover what the repairs cost me, nothing more, nothing less. As a licensed motor vehicle dealer, they should have never had the vehicle up for sale with hacked emissions. If one of their great diesel mechanics had given it a check, he would have seen the hacked SCR just by looking underneath the camper since the weld was visible even at that point. I have complaints in with the Virginia attorney general's consumer affairs office as well as the Better Business bureau regarding this matter. General RV Center has a huge showroom with lots of people and many RV's on the lot. I would have never guessed that they would sell me a vehicle that was not legal to drive. My advice to anybody looking to spend a large amount of money on an RV, especially one with a motor in it would be to look elsewhere since General RV Center is only interested in getting your money and keeping it.
Everyone we worked with there were amazing! Brian answered our 2000 questions like it was no big deal. Andrea kept us sane during the process of shuffling between showroom, inspecting our soon to be coach, and the finance/settlement work. Doug calmed some nerves and handled our concerns. Very happy with the entire process.
Salesperson Performance Review - Shaun Franck Sales Manager - Jimmy Dameron Problem-Solving Skills I clearly communicated the exact make and model I wanted to see and explained that I was on a limited schedule. Unfortunately, the salesperson did not respect that timeframe and instead showed me several other models before the one I specifically requested. Despite multiple reminders, I was not taken to the correct unit until well after my stated departure time. Listening Skills The salesperson did not demonstrate strong listening skills. My priorities and schedule were clearly stated but not acknowledged or acted upon. Industry Knowledge and Expertise The salesperson shared that he had only been in RV sales for two months and even commented that he was "learning from me." While transparency is appreciated, this revealed a lack of product and market knowledge that hindered the overall experience. Customer Awareness There was limited effort to read or respond to my cues as a customer. My expressed preferences were repeatedly overlooked, suggesting a need for additional training in recognizing and adapting to customer needs. Active Listening and Communication Several of my direct requests were disregarded, and at one point, a comment I made was reframed and used in a sales tactic that came across as manipulative. This approach did not inspire confidence or trust. Overall communication felt more like a high-pressure sales interaction than a professional consultation. Summary At the conclusion of my visit, both the salesperson and the sales manager continued to aggressively push for a down payment, despite my clear statements that I had no intention of purchasing that day. I emphasized repeatedly that my goal was simply to view the RV to determine whether it met my requirements — not to place a deposit or make any financial commitment. Their continued insistence, despite my objections and the fact that I needed to leave, made the experience extremely uncomfortable. I did not feel respected as a customer or treated with professionalism. As a result, I will be purchasing my RV elsewhere. Since then the salesperson has texted and called. I have blocked his cell number. He called from the main dealer number. I answered. He asked if I was ready to move forward. I emphatically said "absolutely not!", and hung up. After reading the pages of negative reviews, it is a wonder how they stay in business. Do better General RV. ** Edit After much research, have found the following interesting details about many lawsuits: Defective RV - (2025) Butcher v. General RV Contract and warranty claims (2025) Butler v. General RV Breach of warranty lawsuit (2019) - Carriggs v. General RV Contract fraud (2021) - Utah, state investigators accused General RV employees of manipulating dozens of loan contracts by altering terms and adding hidden balloon payments Over ten pages of negative reviews on the most well known business reporting site (second letter of the alphabet x three)
Phill, Lisa, and Colby went above and beyond! This was our first time purchasing a camper; it’s been a long wanted dream of ours. From start to finish, they helped us find and set up our camper and walk us through the process of everything. Highly recommend the Ashland, VA location.
