I recently completed my apprenticeship and journeyed out through the Portland campus, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the experience. The program was well-structured from start to finish—each year built on the last in a way that kept me challenged but also gave me the skills and confidence to succeed in the field. The instructors were knowledgeable and approachable, bringing real-world experience into the classroom and making the lessons practical and engaging. I really appreciated how they encouraged questions and made sure we understood the "why" behind what we were learning, not just the "how." Hands-on training was another highlight. From day one, I was applying classroom knowledge on the job, which really helped cement what I was learning. The blend of theory, lab work, and on-site experience made the transition to journeyman feel natural and well-earned. The staff at the Portland campus were always supportive and professional—whether it was scheduling, resources, or guidance, they were invested in our success. The program also emphasized safety and professionalism, which I know will carry me through my career. Overall, I would highly recommend apprenticeship through Area 1 Inside Electric JATC to anyone serious about starting a career in the electrical trade. It’s demanding, but the payoff—both in skills and opportunities—is absolutely worth it.
Communication is sub par at best when you have questions. They offer job matching but actually just give you a packet of printed off lists of possible employers. I was offered a free semester after I dropped out because of these issues. Attempted for enroll this year and couldn’t even get a returned email or call from Mike, the director. Chelsea is easy to talk to when you can catch her but she defers a lot to Mike, who doesn’t seem to care much.
I just passed my Journeyman’s test last Thursday 8/7/25 and have noticed a dramatic increase in the quality of the school the last two years or so. About the time Mike came into the picture at JATC changes started happening that were beneficial for the students and just made things more convenient. I felt like they really wanted to get us to pass our tests and gave us great opportunities to do so. When I first started at the school four years ago I would not have been able to recommend it but now I can say it is definitely worth going if you are interested in the electrical field.
My partner attended the electrician program here and graduated recently this June. He said great things about this program and learned many valuable things that he will take into his career. The graduation ceremony was wonderful! Good food. Good atmosphere. Good vibes!
My initial excitement about starting an electrician career was unfortunately extinguished by a recent visit to this training facility. The receptionist, a young white woman, seemed visibly annoyed by my presence and my questions. While not overtly offensive, her dismissive demeanor made it clear I wasn't welcome. To make matters worse, the application process is incredibly confusing, with no clear distinction between required information and qualifying criteria for acceptance. The combination of this lack of clarity and the negative front-office experience makes me question the value of pursuing four years of training here. I would advise others to look elsewhere.
Mike and his whole team were incredibly helpful throughout my experience. Chelsea especially has always been helpful and very communicative. Definitely a great place to get an education for the electrical trade.
Chelsea and Marlene are alway helpful and welcome any questions. Highly recommend anyone interested to reach out.
